Does any of this sound familiar?

It isn't. Nobody ever taught you how to do this. The apps certainly won't. They make their money when you keep swiping, not when you find someone and leave.

I had to learn all of it from scratch at seventy-five. If I can work it out, so can you.

A note from Pat

I was married to Derek for fifty-one years. Then I had to start again.

When Derek died, my granddaughter put me on a dating app. I thought it would be dreadful. Some of it was.

My first photo was a passport picture. My bio said "just ask". I sent "hello" to everyone and wondered why nobody wrote back. I spent three weeks texting a man who turned out to be very keen on texting and not at all keen on meeting.

So I did what I've always done. I paid attention, I kept notes, and I changed what wasn't working.

Eight hundred matches and more than a hundred dates later, I've noticed something. Most people aren't short of options. They're short of a plan. They don't know what they want, they don't say anything worth replying to, and they're too polite to say "next".

That's what this challenge fixes. Thirty days, one page a day, about ten minutes each. No theory and no waffle. Just the things I wish someone had told me, written down so you can actually do them.

Derek would be furious if I just sat at home. I suspect someone in your life feels the same about you.

How it works

Four weeks. Four big shifts.

Each week builds on the last, from sorting out your profile to setting your own standards. Rest days are built in, because I'm not a monster.

Week 1 · Days 1–7

Sort yourself out

Photos that actually look like you, a bio worth reading, and a clear idea of what you want before anyone else decides for you.

"Smile. It's a dating app, not a passport."
Week 2 · Days 8–14

Get talking

First messages people reply to, questions that start real conversations, and how to get from chatting to an actual date.

"Three weeks of texting is a pen pal, not a romance."
Week 3 · Days 15–21

The date

Your safety rules, planning a date you'll enjoy, going on it, and debriefing honestly afterwards.

"Safety first. I'm glamorous, not daft."
Week 4 · Days 22–30

Your standards

Red flags, green flags, ending things kindly when it's not right, and writing your own dating rules to keep.

"Kind is not the same as available. Next."
Week 3 · The date

"Dress for yourself. If he notices, that's a bonus."

By week three you're not just chatting, you're going. You'll set your safety rules, plan a date you'll actually enjoy, and debrief it honestly afterwards, so you know whether it's "again", "maybe" or "next".

What a page looks like

Ten minutes a day. That's all I'm asking.

Every day follows the same simple shape, so there's nothing to figure out. You just open today's page and do it.

  • A line from me to set you straight for the day.
  • One task. Small, specific and doable today, not "be more confident".
  • One question to answer, so you notice what's working.
  • A tick box. You'd be amazed how good it feels to tick it.

Type into it with a free PDF app like Adobe Acrobat Reader, or print it and use a pen. Missed a day? Carry on tomorrow. I've missed plenty.

What you get, and what it does for you

46 pages. Every one of them earns its place.

Profile bio template
A bio that sounds like you on a good day, and finally gives people something to reply to.
First-message method
Fewer conversations that die after "hey", and more that actually go somewhere.
First-date safety rules
You walk in relaxed and in control, because you've already sorted how you'll get there and home.
5 Date Debrief pages
A simple "Again / Maybe / Next" verdict that stops you wasting months on someone who's merely fine.
"Kind ways to say next" templates
End things politely in one message, without the guilt and without ghosting anyone.
Weekly reviews and rest days
You see how far you've come, so you keep going instead of quitting in week two.
Is this for you?

Let's be honest about who this is for

It's for you if…

  • You're getting matches but not dates, or dates but not second ones.
  • You're back on the apps after a breakup, a divorce or a loss, and it all feels foreign.
  • You're tired of the endless swiping and want a plan instead.
  • You like your advice straight, with a bit of humour.
  • You can spare ten minutes a day for a month.

It's not for you if…

  • You want a magic line that makes anyone fall for you. There isn't one.
  • You're looking for pick-up tricks or games. I don't play them.
  • You won't do the tasks. Reading them isn't the same as doing them.
  • You're already happily settled. Go and enjoy it.
Pat's date debriefs

Again, maybe, or next?

Every date gets a debrief and a verdict. It's the same page you'll find in your workbook. Here's how my last three went.

Graham, 74 · retired architect

"Booked a little Italian, asked proper questions, listened to the answers and walked me to my taxi. Didn't once mention his ex-wife."

Again
Clive, 79 · keen gardener

"Lovely manners, dreadful jumper. Spent twenty minutes on his allotment leeks, and I laughed more than I have in months."

Maybe
Michael, 52 · "entrepreneur"

"Told me twice he's always had a thing for older women, then spent pudding on his phone. Older? I'm vintage. And vintage is expensive."

Questions

Before you ask, I've answered

Is this only for older people?

Not at all. Most people who follow me are a third of my age. The apps work the same way whether you're 25 or 75, and so do the mistakes. If you're dating, it's for you.

Which dating apps does it work with?

All of them. Hinge, Tinder, Bumble, whichever you like. It isn't about tricks for one app. It's about your photos, your words, your standards and your nerve, and those come with you everywhere.

How do I get it after I pay?

You'll get a download link straight away, and it's emailed to you too. There's nothing to wait for and nothing posted.

Can I fill it in on my phone?

Yes. Download it and open it in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader app (or your iPhone's Files app), then type straight into the boxes. It's easiest on a tablet or computer, and you can always print it and use a pen.

How much time does it take?

About ten minutes a day. Date days take longer, obviously, but that's the fun part. Each week ends with a rest day.

What if I miss a day?

Carry on tomorrow. It's thirty tasks, not thirty consecutive days of perfect behaviour. Nobody's marking you.

I'm only just single and not sure I'm ready. Is it too soon?

Only you can decide that, but you don't have to start with a date. Week one is all about getting yourself ready, so it's a gentle place to begin. Go at your own pace and only move on to the dating parts when you feel ready.

Is this professional relationship advice?

No. It's practical, honest advice delivered with good humour, not therapy or professional counselling. If you're dealing with something heavier, please speak to someone qualified.

Why is it in US dollars?

Because people follow Pat from all over the world. Your bank converts it automatically at checkout.

Thirty days from now

You'll either have better dates, or the same inbox full of "hey".

One small task a day. A profile you're proud of. Messages people reply to. Dates you actually enjoy. And the confidence to say "next" without feeling guilty.
